Bird Log for spring 2005 on Blow's Downs

14/03/05 - Log opened for this spring. 
14/03/05 - Common Stonechat, 1 male & 1 female on Paddocks Slope
17/03/05 - Common Stonechat, 12. 8 on Paddocks Slope, 3 on fenceline around the plateau &1 female on Downside
                  Slope
17/03/05 - Northern Wheatear, 3 males. 2 on Paddocks slope which moved to the Paddocks & 1 on the plateau
18/03/05 - Common Stonechat, 12 in total with a male on the paddocks, a mixed group of five on the paddocks slope,
                  five on the wires around the plateau and the female which has wintered still on the Downside slope.
18/03/05 - Northern Wheatear, 5 on Paddocks slope am, later on 10 with one on the plateau, one at top of the slope
                  east of the chalk pit and eight in the paddocks.
19/03/05 - Northern Wheatear - at least one male on Paddocks and another on the lower bit of the Paddocks Slope
                  but very foggy. No sign of any Stonechats today.
20/03/05 - Nil of interest on site apart from 3 singing Chiffchaffs
21/03/05 - No report

23/03/05 - No report
24/03/05 - One Northern Wheatear briefly
25/03/05 - Waxwings (2) on Chaul End Hill (between Hatters Way and the Griffin GC)
26/03/05 - No report
27/03/05 - Waxwings (2) on Chaul End Hill (between Hatters Way and the Griffin GC)
28/03/05 - male Northern Wheatear on the Downside slope - still present at 12:00
                 Waxwings (2) on Chaul End Hill (between Hatters Way and the Griffin GC)

31/03/05 - at least 34 Waxwings on the Griffin GC Caddington, opposite the Vauxhall storage centre.
01/04/05 - Waxwings, 34 again between Chaul End village and the Griffin Golf Club Caddington
02/04/05 - 2 or 3 Willow Warbler singing and a single Brambling in the scrub on Kingsbury slope
03/04/05 - A male Ring Ouzel was by the chalk pit at 07:00 but then flew off towards the woods over the farmland. 
                 At  09:00 presumably the same bird was by the pit again but disappeared without me seeing in which
                 direction it went. At 10:00 three Ring Ouzels flew along the slope from the paddocks slope to the chalk pit
                 and then they too headed off over the farmland.
03/04/05 - A male Merlin has been seen four times around the site this morning,
04/04/05 - Nil of note
05/04/05 - Common Redstart,  single male on Downside opposite Oakwood Avenue
06/04/05 - Three male Wheatear on the brow of the hill between the Kingsbury Slope and the Chalk Pit
                 One male Common Redstart on the Downside slope (about 100yds south of Oakwood Ave)
07/04/05 - 2 male Common Redstarts on the Downside slope. 
08/04/05 - 1 Ring Ouzel
09/04/05 - 1 male Common Redstart on Downside Slope close to and in gardens
10/04/05 - Nil of note
11/04/05 - Male Common Redstart on Downside Slope
12/04/05 - Male Common Redstart on Downside Slope and 5 Northern Wheatear on the model Airfield
13/04/05 - 3 Northern Wheatear on the model Airfield

16/04/05 - Male Common Redstart in the bushes behind the quarry at 16.30.Was bush-hopping towards Tesco slope. Also another one elsewhere on the site.

19/04/05 - Female Black Redstart in Paddocks
20/04/05 - Ring Ouzel - 2 females seen in old chalk pit at 08:45 but not since
                 Common Redstart - 1 male in the paddocks 12:00
                 Northern Wheatear - 1 male in the paddocks 11:55

PLEASE IF YOU VISIT THE SITE DO NOT GO INTO THE PADDOCKS EVEN THOUGH MANY OF THE FENCES HAVE BEEN BROKEN DOWN. IT DISTURBS THE BIRDS AND WILL RUIN YOUR CHANCES OF SEEING THEM. THERE ARE PATHS ROUND THE PADDOCKS AND ONE THAT PASSES THROUGH, PLEASE KEEP TO THEM.
